2nd Gustav Klimt Symposium

Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein, portrayed in full-length by Gustav Klimt in 1905 (today: Neue Pinakothek, Munich), established the Villa Toscana in Gmunden am Traunsee as a creative center for art and science as the daughter of the major industrialist, collector and patron of the Vienna Secession Karl Wittgenstein and sister of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. The villa, which was converted by architect and Otto Wagner student Rudolf Perco, became an important network hub for modernism and a venue for exhibitions, performances and salons.

This lively exchange will now be continued with the 2nd Gustav Klimt Symposium, which will take place on March 23, 2024 as part of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024. In addition to the metaphor of the garden as an important motif in the art of the Klimt group and the salon and table culture, selected Klimt paintings will be subjected to an art historical and restoration analysis. In addition, a special focus will be placed on the Wittgenstein House.
